Desktop Bonsai Towns

COMING TO STEAM · WINDOWS 64-BIT

A voxel bonsai that grows a cyberpunk town, right on your desktop.

Desktop Bonsai Towns is an observation sim. Over several hours, a voxel bonsai grows in its pot, and a cyberpunk town builds itself along the trunk and branches: skyscrapers, sky bridges, neon signs, holographic ads, an elevated loop line, and airships.

You are the observer. Leave it running beside your work and look over now and then to see what the town has become.

The first world is Cyberpunk Town. More worlds with other themes are planned.

Highlights

  • It lives on your desktop

Desktop mode hides the background and the interface and leaves only the bonsai on top of your desktop. Clicks on empty space reach the app behind it, the pot can be dragged anywhere, and Ctrl+Alt+B brings the full window back from any app. The town keeps growing while you work in other windows.

  • A town with a life of its own

Tiny residents live in the town. Factions rise, split, and absorb each other: a megacorp buying up the towers, a cult gathering followers, hackers blacking out whole blocks, and a security bureau sealing off the scene.

  • Weather, disasters, invasions

Acid rain, meteors, mechanical spiders, sky pirates, and, very rarely, a giant cat. Everything is made of voxels, so explosions, fires, and earthquakes break the town apart block by block, and a branch that loses its support falls with the houses still on it.

  • Prune it, then grow again

Unlock pruning to cut branches with shears and watch new buds sprout from the cut. Your funds carry over to the next run and pay for permanent unlocks such as cars, flying cars, automatic defenses, a cinematic camera, incident broadcasts, and a photo mode.

  • A shelf of finished trees

Each bonsai takes several hours of real time to finish. Most grow into traditional bonsai forms, and now and then a wild one appears. Finished trees line up on your bonsai shelf, where you can view them in 3D, fill in the collection, and unlock pots for the next tree.

  • When a town falls

If the town is destroyed, a record of its end shows what brought it down and a hint for the next run.

Screenshots

  • A bonsai trunk rising from its pot at night, with neon-lit blocks of a young town on two branches
  • A close view from above of a grown town: lit windows, neon signs in pink and yellow, green treetops and a looping rail line
  • An alien mothership hovering under the branches while the town on the canopy glows above it
  • A full-grown bonsai seen from the side, its branches spread out and covered in neon-lit buildings
  • The start of a run: an empty pot of soil with the first plots laid out in the dark
